Surprisingly to some, soil that is not
particularly fertile is ideal for certain varietals.
As long as the soil drains quickly and deeply, drawing
the roots down to great depths. Rivers that flood, bringing
nutrients to the soil, are ideal for other varietals.
But ultimately, good soil drainage is key.
So, it is the interaction between
the contrasts of the terroir that give grapes their
character - and thus, the character of the wine.
Sonoma County is blessed with the best
of all these factors. The dynamics of Sonoma’s
sub-appellation terroirs are the guiding factors as
to where Lake Sonoma Winery's varietals are planted,
and nurtured. Which means a Zinfandel belongs in one
location, a Chardonnay in another. And so on.
Sonoma sub-appellation wines are
poised to achieve a dominant reputation among the truly
wine knowledgeable. For instance, California’s
finest Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays come from the cooler
areas of Sonoma, as well as some of the top Sauvignon
Blancs. Where it is warmer, like in the Dry Creek area
of the county, some of the state’s most highly
regarded Zinfandels and Cabernet Sauvignons are helping
to earn Sonoma’s reputation for excellence.
